Bassam Freiha Art Foundation Presents ‘Home Is Not A Place’, An Immersive Exhibition By Guatemalan Artist Emilie Dubois
Bassam Freiha Art Foundation (BFAF) has unveiled details of its upcoming exhibitionHome Is Not A Placeby Guatemalan artist Emilie Dubois.
Set to be displayed in the Annex Gallery from February 12, the interactive exhibition will explore the notion that home is an internal feeling and how it can be built anywhere in the world.
Inspired by Dubois’ own experience of living and working alongside people from across the globe in the UAE, the exhibition will feature both a central interactive living room installation and colourful mixed media artworks that express the artist’s ownpersonal identity and experiences of living away from her place of birth.
Blurring the boundaries between art and the environment, the living room element features walls, furniture and floors painted with broad, expressive brushstrokes. By allowingvisitors to step into the artwork physically, it invites everyone to reflect on how it is possible to feel a sense of ‘home’ whilst living in a different place.
Michaela Watrelot, Curator and Director of Exhibitions at Bassam Freiha Art Foundation, said: “Most residents of the UAE know what it feels like to be away from home, or to question where home actually is. Emilie Dubois expresses this beautifully throughHome Is Not a Place, and why we all seek a sense of belonging wherever we go in the world. Bringing her exhibition to BFAFfurthers our ambition to create art that is directly relevant to the community of Abu Dhabi, and our commitment to bringing different forms of art from global established artists to Saadiyat Cultural District.”
UAE-based artist Emilie Dubois, who has exhibited her works in Central America, Europe and the Middle East, said: “Inspired by the diverse, multi-cultural population of the UAE, Home Is Not A Placeexplores the emotional idea of home, andwhat we take with us, what we leave behind and what we rebuild as we set down roots in a different place. By offering a living room installation that people can physically touch and step into, along with a variety of bold, mixed-media artworks, itsymbolises how it feels to build a life far from your original home, and tells astory filled with nostalgia and hope. Ithink it will be an exhibition that speaks to every visitor, and I hope that everyone can relate to it and draw inspiration from it intheir own unique way.”
