Abu Dhabi Festival Presented A Spectacular Comic Opera MÉDÉE In Collaboration With Teatro Real
The Abu Dhabi Festival, presented by Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF) announced its latest co-production with Teatro Real in Madrid, “MÉDÉE,” a mesmerising theatrical experience that promises to captivate audiences with its powerful storytelling and exceptional performances. This spectacular adaptation of the classic Greek tragedy takes the stage at Teatro Real from 19 to 23 September. “MÉDÉE” made its captivating debut as the distinguished opening event of Teatro Real’s highly anticipated 2023/2024 season.
The spectacular new co-production and world premiere brought Luigi Cherubini’s iconic masterpiece to life as the season opener for the world-renowned Teatro Real, Madrid. Set in the ancient city of Corinth, the narrative unfolds through both the eyes of the enchantress and the innocent children representing the victims of the tragic Greek tale filled with passion, betrayal, revenge, and exile.
Her Excellency Huda Alkhamis-Kanoo, the visionary Founder of the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation and the esteemed Artistic Director of the Abu Dhabi Festival, expressed, “We are proud to engage in collaborations with leading international institutions to highlight exclusive productions and commissioned works, with the aim of fueling the arts industry and honouring talented artists. We are delighted to continue our partnership with Teatro Real as we co-produce the opera ‘Medea’ for its debut as part of the opening season at this esteemed Spanish Opera House. The production, under the baton of the renowned orchestra conductor Ivor Bolton and helmed by the accomplished theatrical director and designer PacoAzorín, features the exceptional soprano Maria Agresta.”
Her Excellency concluded her remarks by noting, “We are presenting a piece of work in which the iconic opera star Maria Callas stunned in the role of Medea, making her one of the most celebrated operatic voices of the 20th century. This celebration coincides with the anniversary of her birth, emphasising the enduring significance of opera classics, their revered status, and the enduring human values they have embodied throughout history.”
The anticipated MÉDÉE production was conducted by Ivor Bolton, Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of Teatro Real. PacoAzorin, Director and Set Designer, was also in charge of the magical stage design and setup of the production. Both artists have won multiple awards and have been recognised for their outstanding work across Europe and the world. The presence of Their Majesties, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, added an extra layer of regal splendour to the grand premiere, underlining the cultural significance of “MÉDÉE” and the enduring ties between Spain and the United Arab Emirates.
