Strawfire By Ross Shonhan Introduces The Art Of Warayaki To Abu Dhabi
Acclaimed chef and restaurateur Ross Shonhan is set to revolutionise the culinary scene in Abu Dhabi with the launch of Strawfire at Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental, Abu Dhabi. Opening in October 2024, Strawfire will offer a progressive and immersive dining experience that celebrates the visceral art of Japanese Warayaki cooking with straw and fire.
Strawfire promises to be Abu Dhabi’s premier culinary adventure, merging traditional Japanese techniques with bold, modern design. The restaurant features five distinct spaces, each designed for a unique and theatrical dining experience. Guests will have the option to experience and dine in the Tsumiko Lounge, Warayaki room, Kumiko room, Terasu and the Toyama Room. The suite of distinctly related spaces will be complemented throughout by bespoke Japanese art installations, including a sacred Shimenawa rope and hand-painted silk wall and ceiling coverings.
The extraordinary Shimenawa rope will be featured in the private dining room, measuring an impressive 7.3m, suspended above the dining table. Expected to weigh around 830kg, it will be the largest synthetic Shimenawa ever made. The Shimenawa, or “twisted rope,” holds deep cultural significance in Japan, traditionally marking sacred spaces and warding off impurities.

Strawfire embodies the dynamic energy of Warayaki cooking, combining the golden hues of straw and molten amber flames with the charcoal black of the grill. This sophisticated, luxurious and textured dining experience aims to excite and delight all the senses.
